There may be many reasons why you might have to reset your iPhone, but the process is certainly not explained in the owners manual. It’s not that hard, but you could end up losing all of your data. Remember that a factory reset will bring your device back to “Out of Box” state. So let me show you the right way to factory reset an iPhone. (If you would rather watch a video, scroll down to view it.)

Step 1: Backup Your iPhone

First we need to make sure you dont lose your data after resetting. Here’s how to backup your phone to iCloud.

Go to Settings > Apple ID > iCloud > iCloud Backup > Back Up Now

Step 2: Turn Off Find My iPhone

You will need to turn off Find My iPhone. Apple has a security measure in place to force the user to put in the Apple ID Password. Here’s how to turn that off:

Go to Settings > Apple ID > Find My > Find My iPhone > (Toggle Off)

Step 3: Erase All Content and Settings

Once your backup is complete, and you have Find My iPhone turned off, now it’s time to wipe your phone. Navigate to this, then follow the prompts:

Go to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings
